Dorsten's History - Station 18: Hardt Translation: Lyn

At the official opening ceremony of the history station "Dorsten Hardt", Mayor Lambert Lütkenhorst greeted not only the previous mayor and honorary citizen of the town of Dorsten, Mr Lampen, but also the neighbour, Mimmi Brinkmann, who is well-known everywhere as a contemporary eye witness.

Hans Lampen gave a presentation of the 2500 year history of "Dorsten Hardt". His presentation of the last 100 years of this, was interrupted several times by anecdotes from Mimmi Brinkmann, which made many of the guests at the ceremony smile.

There is a large landed estate at the lower end of the "Schölsbach" Brook , which exercises the manorial system over Dorsten and Gahlen.

A member of the nobility, Athalgard, donates several estates within the district of Gahlen (Hardt and Östrich) to the Abbey in Werden.

The noblewoman, Imeza, transfers the landed estate of Dorsten and the estates belonging to it to the canonical diocese of Xanten.

The "Schölsbach" Brook has been the border, since the 14th century, between Dorsten in the ward of Cologne and Gahlen in the ward of Kleve, to which latter the Hardt belongs.



Gahlen follows the teachings of the Reformation.



In the Treaty of Xanten, Brandenburg/Prussia gains the Duchy of Kleve and with it, the Hardt.

The North American colonies reject England's political decisions on customs' duties.

Coal House




The Coal House "Kohlhaus" is founded on the southern bank of the River Lippe, which is an important loading location for the coal trade between the Ruhr area and the Lower Rhine area.



The municipality of Gahlen and the farming communities of the Hardt, Besten and Östrich belong to the district of Dinslaken. The street "Clemens-August-Straße" is the border nowadays between Gahlen (Rhineland) and Dorsten (Westphalia).




Bernhard Kleinespel builds the restaurant "Zum Reichsadler", which he extends in 1908 by adding a function room which becomes a hall for celebrating in "Festsaal" for the Hardt and for the town of Dorsten. Fifteen years later, his son Bernhard incorporates a modern bakery into the building.

The Hardt becomes part of the municipality of Dorsten.

The protestant church community of Gahlen "Evangelishche Kirchengemeinde Gahlen" opens a church within the Hardt area.

The Church of St Nicholas "St Nikolauskirche" becomes the centre of a new parish in the deanery of Dorsten.



The areas of the Hardtberg and Östrich become part of the town of Dorsten. The district of the town, known as Hardt/Östrich develops into a highly-valued residential area.

Martial law is suspended in Poland.




As a result of the construction of the A31 Motorway and the main road leading to it (Königsberger Allee), the Hardt loses its sledging paradise on the meadow "Hoffrogges Wiese".

The social centre of the Hardt was, of course, the Kleinespel Hall "Saal Kleinespel", which served as an emergency church after the war, enabling the first services of the protestant community of the Hardt to be held there and in which not only political discussions took place but where, for generations, true dramas developed in the dance courses on the dance floor, all of which was clearly portrayed in the Mayor's poem and in Mimmi Brinkmann's comments.

That's why, for many, the name Kleinespel doesn't just make them think of fine bread and cakes but also of dancing classes in the Kleinespel Ballroom "Saal Kleinespel", which led, as can be proved, to many marriages,
